Our approach

Our company has a bias for action. We believe that rather than produce highly sophisticated charging points that are too expensive to be rolled out in large numbers, we should make simple, affordable charging points that can be installed all over the country.

We see the immediate challenge not to find complex ways to bill for the very small amount of electricity used by plug-in cars but to encourage the widespread adoption of electric and plug-in vehicles by providing as many charging points as possible.

Short term, where the electricity is not provided "free" by the installer, we favour a simple permit based system and ad hoc charging similar to street parking charges. To facilitate this we are developing a pay-by-phone billing option, that will also "lock" the charging point and allow for different tariffs depending on the time of day.

In the future, with much higher take up, our charging points can be easily upgraded to allow for greater sophistication to be introduced. This could include smart metering and vehicle to grid supply.

"Current charging points cost between £5,000 and £7,000 to manufacture and install and this represents a significant cost which would be need to be recouped within any business plan."

Our belief is that this cost is far too high and will deter the introduction of a charging infrastructure.

A key problem with small numbers of high cost charging points is that they require dedicated parking bays to ensure access. This raises significant resistance where space is limited. We believe that by making it possible to install ten low cost charging points for the price of one sophisticated charging point, we can avoid the need for reserved space and further encourage adoption of plug-in cars.

We aim to provide charging points
for £500 or less.
